Historie - Ženklava [ History ]
The first written reference dates back to 1411. The village belonged to the domain of Štramberk, later to the domain of Fulnek and even later to the domain of Kunín. In 1588 it was sold to Nový Jičín and from that time it remained part of the domain Nový Jičín/Štramberk. The originally Czech village got in desolate state in the course of the 16th century and was re-settled by German population. Many of the non-catholic inhabitants moved out at the beginning of the 18th century to the Saxon town Herrnhut, that was founded in 1722 for evangelic exiles from Moravia. One of them was the carpenter Kristián David. Agriculture had remained for many centuries the essential source of livelihood of the population, in recent times they also found work in the Štramberk quarries and lime-kilns and also in Kopřivnice or Ostrava.
