Opava [ Village or Town/City ]

Opava is also an important archaeological site, where the existence of a Slavonic ancient settlement from the 10th-12th century was confirmed during excavations. In spite of considerable damage caused at the end of World War II, a visitor can admire many cultural sights, beautiful parks and orchards during a stroll through the town.
Many cultural institutions have a long-standing tradition in Opava. Records of theatre performances date back to 1522 and the first independent building of the Silesian Theatre was built in 1805, the current one dates back to 1883. In 1814 the Silesian Provincial Museum was founded, the oldest museum in the Czech Republic.

Since 1990 Opava has been the seat of Silesian University.

Plní funkci základního stupně územní samosprávy a v různé míře je také vykonavatelem státní správy.
