Spanish chapel (The chapel of Our Lady) [ Church or cathedral ]

Nový Jičín, Španělská kaple
The Spanish chapel is situated in Smetanovy Sady (Smetana's park). According to local tradition it was built up above the common grave of an emperor crew, which in 1621 was flogged by the army of protestant margrave from Krnov. Big part of the emperor crew was formed by Neapolitan soldiers (The Neapolitan Kingdom was a part of Spanish domain at that time), and that's why it's called the Spanish chapel now. The pilgrimage shrine was very popular mainly in the late 18th century. In 1787 it served as a salt storage. Thanks to František Mech from Nový Jičín the chapel was repaired around 1830 and since 1841 it served as a pilgrimage shrine again. In 1863 - 1864 a tower was added to the chapel and its interior was completed. The mechanical bethlehem is charming visitors to the chapel especially during Christmas.

From this place there is also a remarkable view of the ruine of castle in Starý Jičín, when you look west.
