The ticket office and pavilions are shut one hour before the zoo closes.

The zoo was established on 26 October 1951, has area of 102 ha and houses 900 over 200 species of animals. The wooded parkland area provides ideal opportunities for recreation and relaxation. The zoo specialises in breeding rare and endangered species and is involved in 12 European Endangered Species Breeding Programmes. The zoo's breeding of the Lynx lynx has made it internationally famous. The educational centre works with schools in providing ecological education and catering for the interest of young people. Since 1996 the Ostrava zoo has been a full member of the European Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
