Toller´s House [ Town house or building ]

After the town of Kelč was fortified, the square was enclosed with two gates. "The upper town gate" was situated between houses No. 20 and No. 21 and "the lower town gate" is situated between the town hall and the Fryčaj´s house. At the upper gate, a toll (a charge for using the town roads and bridges, intended to collect money to maintain them) was collected. The person in charge of that activity was a toller, who lived in the house No. 20 at the upper gate. His task was to collect the toll from every, full or empty, trade or foreign wagon passing through the toll gate in any direction. He handed over the toll collected to the chateau representatives once a week.

Based on historic documents, it is known that Bishop Peter Jelito obliged, in 1383, Mikuláš, Reeve of Police, to maintain the bridges along the road to the Kelč toll gates in perfect condition.

In addition, a dispute between Bishop Mikuláš of Olomouc and Lacko of Kravaře over the toll has been settled by a legal document of August 5th, 1396, as follows:

?All the merchants carrying their goods from the Opava area or Poland who want to pass through the villages of Milotice, Špičky and Zbrašov or continue to Kroměříž or further shall pay a toll in Kelč.
All those from the above mentioned places who pass through the village of Choryně and continue to Bystřice shall pay a toll in Kelč as well. (etc.)?
In addition, court "Lapač" related to the Kelč toll, where that merchants were stopped (caught) who wanted to get to the road leading from Meziřičí to Holešov along a cart track from Choryně to bypass the toll gates in Meziříčí and Kelč.
