PALACKÝ František [ Notable personality ČR ]

Hodslavice, Památník Františka Palackého
*14. 6. 1798 Hodslavice
+ 26. 5. 1876 Praha

Maybe the most prominent personality of the region of Nový Jičín from the point of view of the Czech nation. The first scientific historiographer of the Czech history, philosopher, and politician, František Palacký, called also the Father of the Nation, was born in an ancient Moravian village of Hodslavice, which was for the greater part Protestant. As if Comenius’ spirit had found his successor in Palacký. Palacký acquired the fundamentals of his education in Kunwald (today’s Kunín), in the school of another prominent personality, the progressive Countess Walburga of Truchsess-Zeil. František Palacký laid the foundations of the modern Czech historiography with emphasis on the big adventure, which is the study of archival sources. Palacký’s significance, however, presently lies in his personal qualities, in the democratic principles of the federalization of the then Austrian Monarchy as an up-to-date appeal for an equal coexistence of European nations and nationalities, whereas his philosophical - religious ideas form the foundation of a common way of all churches, of ecumenicalism. František Palacký’s native home in Hodslavice, a National Culture Monument, with its new modern exposition, shows the life and work of the eminent awakener of the national consciousness and the European of the present day.
