Natural monument Lom u Straníku (suggestion) [ Natural Monument ]

Nový Jičín, Straník, starý lom
It concerns a geological monument, where in the walls of lonely quarry are to be seen
horizontally laid veins of so-called olivine tephrite.

Stopping Nr. 12 - Quarry with a small lake and riverbed of Straník stream, Palacký's nature trails
(elevation above sea level 490 m)

In the lonely, partly flooded quarry along the street from Kojetín to Straník we find another forms of undersea volcanic activity in the lower chalk. Inside the back wall of quarry there olivine tephrites are exposed, that originated as layer veins to the stratified rifts in the order of sedimentated minerals of formation of Těšín-Hradiště of Silesian unit. Glowing lava thermally transformed in its surroundings of sedimentated mineral.

Nowadays the lower part of the past quarry is flooded. Originated small lake serves as a basis for the reproduction of some species of the amphibians.

For a long time this place served as an uncontrolled dumpsite. Treatment of the place including refuse disposal was made by the member of ZO Czech Conservationists Organization Nový Jičín. Aim is to secure access to the back side of quarry.

Serious geology interested people can study another expressions of volcanic activity, that participated in the origins of lower-chalk tephra association in two unmarked localities.

1. Round the way to Staník approximately 300 m on the left side over the Straník stream by the edge of forested hill there is another lonely quarry. In the lower part of quarry wall there is uncovered undersea lava pall, eruption of olivine diabase. In its overlying rock, in the taller part of the wall a layer of pyroclasts stands out. These close a contactly thermally transformed fragments of minerals from formation of Těšín-Hradiště.

2. In the deeply cut riverbed of the Straník stream along the street to Straník a man can in the unexposed wall and in the riverbed here and there observe layers of sandstones and claystones, that also close greater or smaller fragments of sedimentated minerals from the formation of Těšín-Hradiště. Volcanic component part here is built by picrit almond-stone.

Olivine tephrite and to them related minerals were sooner on many places mined for a building stone and crushed stone. From these quarries a lot of minerals was described. Among them pelosiderite was of economical importance, whose occurance in the surroundings of Žilina, Bludovice, Hodslavice, Mořkov, Veřovice and Rybí was a stimulate to mining extraction. It was imported for the purposes of iron production in the 19th century to ironworks in Vítkovice, Ustroň, Třinec and Čeladná. As recently as in 1850, 164 234 q of this iron ore were produced (J. Bechný, 1963).

In the research of the local volcanic minerals participated to a large extent Štefan Weigel (*1848 in Nové Město na Moravě, † 1924 in Žilina), national history and geografy worker, who worked as a police constable in Suchdol nad Odrou. During his life he gathered a wide collection of grinding of minerals from separate localities. Nowadays the collection is missing.

Quarry has its local name "At the eye". Till the 1950's a stone was mined here, that was used in the surrounding villages especially for the strengthening of the roads.

Around the lony quarry in the rutted road leads a narrow street connecting Straník and Kojetín. It concerns a preserved stretch of old road from Valašské Meziříčí to Nový Jičín. Horse and carts of shopkeepers went here to the Nový Jičín markets. Jagged stretch was for shopkeepers especially danger and no wonder, that with this place legends of rebels are connected, who especially in the night hours held up and stole goods and money.
